Milk line cleaning chemicals on a raw milk piping system
Milk line cleaning chemicals were used after every milking session at a dairy farm in Aguadulce, Panama, with large quantities of milk scale remover and alkaline cleaner and an extraordinary deep clean every 21 days. The raw milk piping still needed frequent maintenance, and inconsistent residue removal was a hygiene risk. In August 2022 one HydroFLOW® S38 was fitted to the cold water inlet of the electric water heaters serving the cleaning system, on half-inch CPVC pipe with no shutdown. Scale remover use fell from 900 ml to 700 ml, the chemical interval stretched from 15 to 22 days, and the saving came to $803 a year.
The Challenges
- Milk line cleaning chemicals were needed after every milking session
- Consumption of milk scale remover and alkaline cleaner was high
- An extraordinary deep clean was required every 21 days
- The piping needed frequent corrective and preventive maintenance
- Inconsistent residue removal was a hygiene risk
The Solution
- Unit installed: HydroFLOW® S38
- Installation point: cold water inlet of the electric water heaters serving the cleaning system
- Pipe size: half-inch CPVC
- Installed: August 2022, with no shutdown
- Previous treatment: scale remover and alkaline cleaner after every milking
The unit went on the cold water feed to the heaters, so the water supplying the cleaning system was treated before it reached the raw milk piping. The signal disrupts the conditions that bond milk scale to surfaces, so existing residue loosens during washing and new scale does not build up between cleans. Milk line cleaning chemicals fell and the chemical interval extended from 15 to 22 days.
