Las Vegas Resort: 8M Gallons of Cooling Water Saved a Year

Key results
8M gallons water saved/year
~$47k estimated annual saving
Sulphuric acid eliminated

Summary

With two HydroFLOW® i190 units on the recirculating lines, a Las Vegas casino resort raised its cooling tower conductivity and cut blowdown, saving an estimated 8 million US gallons and around $47,000 a year. Sulphuric acid treatment was stopped, and hard deposits came out as a fine powder rather than scale. In a city where water is the scarce resource, most of the saving is the water itself; biocide has not yet been reduced, so there may be more to come.

Case Study from HydroFLOW USA

Cooling tower water savings at a Las Vegas resort

Cooling tower water savings were the priority at a Las Vegas casino resort running a 1,000-ton cooling tower system, in a region where heat and prolonged drought make every gallon count. Blowdown was discharging a lot of water, raising conductivity to cut it risked hard scale, and sulphuric acid was used to control the water chemistry. Two HydroFLOW® i190 units were installed on the recirculating lines in December 2025, so the operators could raise the conductivity setpoint and reduce blowdown while staying within the manufacturer’s water chemistry limits. By the September 2026 inspection, the resort was saving an estimated 8 million US gallons and around $47,000 a year, and sulphuric acid treatment had stopped.

The Challenge

  • Cooling tower water savings were needed in a drought-hit region
  • Blowdown discharged a large volume of water
  • Raising conductivity risked hard scale formation
  • Sulphuric acid was used to control water chemistry
  • The system had to stay within the manufacturer’s water chemistry limits

The Solution

  • Units installed: two HydroFLOW® i190
  • Installation point: cooling tower recirculating water lines
  • System: 1,000-ton cooling tower
  • Installed: December 2025, last inspected September 2026

To make cooling tower water savings without adding scale risk, the two i190 units went on the recirculating water lines, and the operators then raised the conductivity setpoint so the tower blew down less often. Sulphuric acid treatment was discontinued, and the tower and chillers were checked for scale and biofouling through to the September 2026 inspection.
