Case Study from HydroFLOW Italia
Cooling tower bacteria control is normally a chemical job. At a multinational food producer’s plant in Italy, the chemiclas were not doing it: despite biocide, antiscalant and anticorrosion dosing, counts in the evaporative cooling towers stayed aroudn 12,000 CFU/ml.
The Challenge
- Cooling tower bacteria control was not being achieved, with counts around 12,000 CFU/ml
- Biocide, antiscalant and corrosion inhibitor were all being dosed into the tower water
- The operator wanted to reduce its reliance on all three chemicals
- Monitoring and maintenance of the towers were an ongoing demand
- The towers cool plant equipment including compressors and turbines
The Solution
- Unit installed: 1 × HydroFLOW® i160
- Installation point: primary circuit recirculation pipe of the co-generation cooling tower
- Dosing stopped: biocide, antiscalant and anticorrosion
- Trial: 180 days, with operating parameters monitored throughout
To move cooling tower bacteria control away from chemical dosing, the unit was fitted on the recirculation pipe and the three dosing programmes were stopped. Bacterial counts, scaling, maintenance and purge flow were all reported over the trial.
