Koi pond water clarity restored in one week

Koi pond water clarity had dropped to around 80 cm of visibility in a German pond, clouded by algae and suspended solids. The bottom was no longer visible from the surface, the eight filter units were clogging quickly with dispersed algae, and the fish kept stirring sediment back into the water. In July 2017 one HydroFLOW® K40 was fitted to the suction line ahead of the filter bank, with no shutdown or draining. Suspended algae and fine particles flocculated so the existing filters could capture them. The water was clear to full depth within a week, and sediment stirred up by the fish is now captured.

The Challenge

  • Koi pond water clarity had dropped to around 80 cm visibility
  • The pond bottom was no longer visible from the surface
  • Eight filter units were clogging quickly with dispersed algae
  • Fish activity kept stirring sediment back into the water
  • The pond could not be drained or shut down

Koi pond filter sponges clogged with green algae before HydroFLOW, and a much cleaner filter sponge after, Germany
The Solution

  • Unit installed: HydroFLOW® K40
  • Installation point: suction line ahead of the eight-unit filter bank
  • Installed: July 2017, with no shutdown or draining

The K40 was fitted to the suction line in minutes, with the pond left running. The signal causes suspended algae and fine particles to flocculate, so the existing filters capture them rather than passing them through. The owner watched the filter units start capturing the algae that had been passing straight through, and koi pond water clarity returned to full depth within one week.

Key Outcomes

R

Pond visibility restored to full 160cm depth

R

All 8 filters cleaned in time previously needed for 1

R

Noticeable clarity improvement within 1 week

R

Algae flocculated and captured by existing filters

Independent Verification

All results in this study were measured and verified by third-party facilities managers and technical staff.

Summary

Visibility went from around 80 cm to full depth in a week, without draining the pond. Koi ponds are demanding because the fish are the problem as well as the point. The filters now capture algae rather than clogging with it, and that includes the sediment the fish keep stirring up. This is the aquaculture reference on the site.
