UV steriliser replacement on a car carrier’s potable water
M/V Harvest Leader needed a UV steriliser replacement because its UV unit controlled bacteria in the drinking water and did nothing else. It offered no protection against scale in the calorifier or the accommodation pipework, and the vessel needed both. Safe drinking water had to be maintained across the accommodation, with lab testing to validate any change. In October 2014 two HM45 units were fitted to the cold water supply and hot water return lines. Lab testing showed bacteria held at 0 CFU, the UV steriliser was no longer required, and the calorifier and accommodation pipework gained protection from scale.
The Challenges
- A UV steriliser replacement was needed because UV controlled bacteria only
- There was no prevention of scale in the calorifier
- Accommodation pipework had no protection against scale
- Safe drinking water quality had to be maintained across the accommodation
- System reliability was required at sea with no shore support
- Lab testing was required to validate any change
The Solution
- Units installed: Two HM45 units
- Installation point: cold water supply and hot water return lines
- Previous treatment: UV steriliser, bacteria control only
The two units were fitted to the cold water supply and the hot water return, so treatment covered both the supply and the circuit through the calorifier. The signal maintains bacteria-free drinking water and disrupts the conditions that bond scale to surfaces. Lab tests returned 0 CFU, confirming the UV steriliser replacement was doing the bacteria job, and the UV unit was no longer required.
