Belt press pan scale at Water Conserv II, Orlando
Belt press pan scale had reached around 5 mm of hard struvite at Orlando’s Water Conserv II, bridging the holes in the press drum and forcing belt removal and hot water cleaning. Centrate was transferred around the clock, and polymer dosing and cleaning frequency were both under review. One HydroFLOW® Custom 12 inch unit was fitted to the belt press influent pipe, downstream of anionic polymer injection, on an AshBrook Klam press with two 2 metre belts. Over 150 days of continuous running, pan scale fell from 5 mm to 1 mm of brittle scale, the press needed no scale clean, and better flocculation cut average daily polymer use by about 20%.
The Challenge
- Belt press pan scale had reached around 5 mm of hard struvite
- Hard scale bridged the holes in the press drum
- Polymer dosing and cleaning frequency were both under review
- Cleaning required belt removal and hot water
- Centrate was transferred continuously, 24 hours a day
The Solution
- Unit installed: one HydroFLOW® Custom 12 inch unit
- Installation point: belt press influent pipe, downstream of anionic polymer injection
- System: AshBrook Klam press with two 2 metre wide belts
- Trial: 150 days of continuous operation
The belt press pan scale was treated on the influent line, just downstream of the anionic polymer injection point. The unit ran continuously while the press worked through the 150 day trial without a scale clean. New struvite accumulation was controlled, existing deposits softened, and flocculation improved enough to reduce polymer use.
Testimonial
“After 10 days of use, there was a marked reduction in the amount of struvite buildup and eventually the struvite had softened to the point that it could be wiped off by hand. During the demonstration, the unit was run continuously without any cleaning.” — Steve Shelnutt, Plant Manager, Water Conserv II
