Electric steam boiler scale at a Florida medical centre
Electric steam boiler scale had built up to about 3 mm on the heating elements of a Sussman ES135 boiler at a medical centre in Florida. The boiler has eight elements, each averaging four years of service, and the hard scale also lined the inside of its heating chambers. One HydroFLOW® i60 was fitted on the incoming copper cold-water pipe feeding the boiler, and its performance was assessed after 60 days. By then no new hard scale had formed, the existing scale had been removed from the elements and chambers, and what remained was a very loose powder. The case study reports a 16-month payback.

The Challenge
- Electric steam boiler scale had reached about 3 mm on the heating elements
- Hard scale also lined the inside of the heating chambers
- Each of the eight elements averaged four years of service
- Scale control was needed to protect heat transfer
The Solution
- Unit installed: one HydroFLOW® i60
- Installation point: incoming copper cold-water pipe feeding the boiler
- Equipment: Sussman ES135 electric steam boiler with eight heating elements
- Assessment: after 60 days of operation
To control electric steam boiler scale at the source, the i60 went on the copper cold-water pipe that feeds the Sussman ES135. The boiler kept running normally, and after 60 days it was opened so the heating elements and the heating chambers could be inspected for new and existing scale.
