Pool UV replacement at Mountain View Aquatic Center
Pool UV replacement was the question at Mountain View Aquatic Center in Cobb County, Georgia, which had used UV secondary disinfection for around 15 years to control chloramines and improve air quality. The UV system’s power and maintenance costs were high, chlorine use peaked at 310 lbs a week and a manual backwash took almost eight minutes. A HydroFLOW® Custom 12” unit was installed on the recirculating pool system and evaluated from late 2017 to early 2018, first alongside the UV and then with the UV turned off. The pool ran without UV, estimated yearly power and maintenance costs fell from $4,701 to $329, and backwash time came down to 6.5 minutes.

The Challenge
- Pool UV replacement was needed to cut the cost of UV secondary disinfection
- UV had been in use for around 15 years to control chloramines and air quality
- UV power and maintenance costs were high
- Chlorine use peaked at 310 lbs a week
- A manual backwash took almost eight minutes
The Solution
- Unit installed: one HydroFLOW® Custom 12”
- Installation point: recirculating pool system
- Evaluation: late 2017 to early 2018, in three phases
- Signal verified: surge tank, pool, UV system and heat exchanger
The evaluation was built so that pool UV replacement could be judged step by step. Baseline data came first, then a phase with the HydroFLOW® unit running alongside the UV, and finally a phase with the UV turned off while the unit stayed on. Chlorine, ORP, turbidity, air quality and backwash time were followed through each phase, and signal readings confirmed the treatment was reaching the surge tank, the pool, the UV system and the heat exchanger.
