Case Study from HYDROPATH Asia
A moulding softener alternative on 380 ppm water
A moulding softener alternative was needed at a Thai injection moulding plant running on water at 380 ppm hardness. The cooling tower was cleaned every two weeks, the heat exchanger was scaling and losing heat transfer, and the injection machines were overheating frequently, all while softener chemicals were consumed to try to hold it back. In June 2002 one HydroFLOW® C60 was fitted to the cooling system pipework. It released the existing deposits as sediment, stopped new scale forming and removed the need for softener chemicals. The fortnightly tower cleaning and the overheating both stopped.
The Challenges
- A moulding softener alternative was needed for water at 380 ppm hardness
- The cooling tower had to be cleaned every two weeks
- Heat exchanger scaling was cutting heat transfer
- Injection machines were overheating frequently
- Softener chemicals were a running cost and were not holding the scale back
The Solution
- Unit installed: one HydroFLOW® C60
- Installation point: cooling system pipework
- Installed: June 2002
- Water: 380 ppm hardness
- Previous treatment: softener chemicals
The unit was fitted to the cooling system pipework and nothing else was changed on the cooling system. The signal disrupts the conditions that bond scale to surfaces, so the existing deposits came away as sediment rather than having to be cut out, and no shutdown was needed. As a moulding softener alternative, it removed the need for softener chemicals and ended the fortnightly tower cleaning.
