Pool chemical reduction on two pools

Pool chemical reduction was needed at two pools in India, of 445,000 and 110,000 litres, that were backwashed every 48 hours and dosed heavily with chlorine. The water carried a strong chlorine odour and was losing clarity to algae. In August 2019 one HydroFLOW® P-160 was fitted before the pump on the 130 mm GI pipe serving both pools. Filtration improved, algae stopped clouding the water and backwashing fell. Chemical use came down by 55% and water use by 60%, and the chlorine smell went with the excess chlorine. One unit did the work for both pools.

The Challenges

  • A pool chemical reduction was needed, with high chlorine dosing in use
  • Backwashing was required every 48 hours
  • A strong chlorine odour was present
  • Algae growth was affecting water clarity
  • Two pools of very different sizes had to be served by one installation

The Solution

  • Unit installed: HydroFLOW® P-160
  • Installation point: before the pump, on the feed serving both pools
  • Pipe size: 130 mm GI
  • System: two pools of 445,000 and 110,000 litres
  • Installed: August 2019

Circulation for both pools ran through one pump room, so a single P-160 on the shared 130 mm feed could treat both. The signal improves filtration. Once the filters were capturing the fine particles, algae stopped clouding the water and backwashing and chemical dosing could be cut. The pool chemical reduction reached 55%, and backwashing settled into a weekly routine.

Key Outcomes

R

Water consumption cut around 60%

R

Backwashing cut from every 2 days to weekly

R

Chemical dosing costs cut around 55%

R

Water clarity and colour stayed high

Independent Verification

All results in this study were measured and verified by third-party facilities managers and technical staff.

Summary

A 55% chemical cut and a 60% water cut from one unit serving two pools is the best combined figure in the pool set. The odour going is what swimmers notice first, and algae is now controlled with clarity restored. A shared pump room is a common layout at clubs and hotels, and worth checking before assuming two units are needed.
