Palace of Parliament: 50% Less Biofouling in 6 Months

Home 9 Case Studies and Results 9 Palace of Parliament: 50% Less Biofouling in 6 Months
Key results
~50% less biofouling
New pipe protected
30+ year-old pipe improved

The Challenge

  • Hot water pipework biofouling had built up across both new and decades-old sections
  • Thick biofouling deposits altered water quality
  • Rust layers and flakes accumulated inside the pipework
  • Scale was also present inside the water-supply pipes
  • The building runs nine levels above ground, nine below and more than 1,000 rooms

The Solution

One HydroFLOW® i120 was fitted to Palace of Parliment in Bucharest on the 120 mm pump-free hot-water supply line, and a newer galvanised pipe section was visually assessed against adjacent steel pipework that had been in service for more than 30 years, over six months. Visual inspection estimated about 50% less biofouling across both sections. The newer pipe was protected from further biofouling and showed no further calcium or magnesium salt deposition, while existing deposits inside the decades-old pipe visibly reduced.

Key Outcomes

R

Visual inspection estimated about 50% less biofouling across both tested pipe sections

R

Further calcium and magnesium salt deposition was not observed on the newer pipe

R

The newer pipe was protected from further biofouling deposits

R

Existing deposits inside the 30+ year-old pipework visibly reduced
