Cape Town Seawater Line: Mussels Out, Flow Restored

Home 9 Case Studies and Results 9 Cape Town Seawater Line: Mussels Out, Flow Restored
Key results
2 weeks to clear marine growth
0 new sea life over 6 months
200mm treated pipe diameter

Case Study from HydroFLOW South Africa

The Challenges

  • Biofilm, barnacles and mussels established inside the pipelines
  • Reduced effective pipe diameter caused strainer blockages
  • Periodic jetting was needed to clear obstructed lines
  • Downtime and maintenance burden continued to climb

The Solution

One HydroFLOW® i Custom unit was fitted to a 200mm seawater line feeding Heat Exchanger 4 in November 2023, between the seawater pump and the heat exchanger, with no shutdown required. The signal disrupts the conditions that allow marine life to attach and grow inside the pipework.

Key Outcomes

R

Heavy biofouling discharged within 2 weeks

R

Improved flow lifted heat exchanger efficiency

R

No new sea life in treated line over 6 months

R

Routine jetting removed from maintenance rota
